CovidSurg – one of the largest studies in surgery
GlobalSurg & The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery is a University of Birmingham initiative to improve surgical outcomes trough worldwide cohort studies
Many projects before the pandemic have been initiated concerning post-operative care, post-operative infection rates and risk factors, post oncological surgery nutritional care in low and middle income countries, Covid-Surg and many more.
Recent data published by the initiative in well known international journal Lancet has suggested post-operative complications in patients with an active COVID-19 infection. Following this study, a worldwide cohort clinical study was launched to establish differences between post-operative complication rates in any surgical speciality in patients who have been infected with COVID-19 and show no symptoms in the time of the surgery, in patients who have an active COVID-19 infection in time of surgery and in patients who have no COVID-19 infection. One of the clinics involved in the ongoing study in our own Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital Department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. Our mini-team leader role has been taken by our own director of the department Doc. Anna Ivanova. More about the study you can read here.
