Acquired medical diploma in previously Latvian Medical Academy. Right after academy, joined oral and maxillofacial surgery residency and together with dentistry diploma got certified in year of 2000. Soon after along with colleagues Prof. Šalms passed the surgical exam in Edinbourg and was certified by Royal College of Surgeons of Edinbourg in 2005.

While acquiring phD degree in Riga Stradins University specializing in biomaterial integration in atrophing lower jaws, Prof. Šalms was chief surgeon in Institute of Stomatology, Director of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital as well as a part time Surgeon in Adenta clinic.

Currently Prof. Šalms is a board member of Institute of Stomatology, Director of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery residency program, Chief Surgeon in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery clinic of Institute of Stomatology and involved in research project in Biomaterial Centre of Excellence.
